The Energy and Utilities Maintenance Engineer is responsible for leading the maintenance program for the energy generation plants to meet safety, reliability, cost, and operational goals of the department by implementing and executing engineering, maintenance and reliability best practices. The incumbent oversees the maintenance of all utility plant equipment, facilities and distribution including chillers, boilers, generators, pumps and auxiliary equipment. The Energy and Utilities Maintenance Engineer is expected to drive planning/scheduling, reliability, maintenance effectiveness, plant efficiency, and establish continuous improvement programs to drive departmental KPIs relevant to their area of responsibility.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience. A minimum four years' experience in maintenance, engineering, operations, or mechanical field related to engineering, operations, or maintenance of industrial process. If a Bachelor's degree is not held, directly related work experience will be a minimum of 12 years.

University of Florida

The University of Florida is seeking an energetic, dynamic, and technical leader for the University's Main Campus Utility Operations Departments in Gainesville, Florida.  The Utility Operations Department is comprised of over 60 employees and serve the following utilities to 22M GSFT of buildings:

  • Electrical Systems: Operation of all electrical distribution and transmission infrastructure from the point of utility company delivery to campus buildings. Systems include medium voltage (5KV, 15KV, and 23KV) cable, substations, transformers, and switchgear in both overhead and underground distribution.
  • Chilled Water Production and Distribution: Operation of district network of 9 chiller plants (42000 Tons) serving the campus wide distribution system.
  • Steam Production and Distribution: Operation of central boiler plant (220,000 Lb/hr) and all steam distribution infrastructure

Job Duties:

  • Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System program software to create process and complete planned and corrective maintenance work orders.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction by establishing regular communications regarding maintenance and repair activities for affected discipline(s).
  • Perform field inspections to review work progress and resolve work conflicts.
  • Assures compliance with applicable building codes and Caltech Design Guidelines.
  • Manage Caltech resources for optimum productivity.
  • Manage shop budgets and report financial performance status.
  • Enhance the performance of licensed heating/ventilation/air conditioning/refrigeration technicians.
  • Respond to trouble calls, emergency conditions and analyze routine work requests for timely execution and completion.
  • Enforce adherence to campus fire, life safety, confined space, lock out and tag out procedures.
  • Perform and maintain up to date records for all safety inspections, tests, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Maintain technical proficiency with new equipment technologies, regulatory requirements and engineering advances in improved operational performance.
  • Evaluates shop personnel for performance, training, work schedules, vacations, discipline and merit salary adjustments.
  • Assist and supervise third party contractors and vendors awarded campus work.
  • Provide written and oral reports effectively.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • 10-years' supervisory experience in a large campus or facility construction, operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment.
  • 5-year journeyman level experience in the HVAC trade and expertise with all test instruments and tools of the trade.
  • Knowledge of building codes, regulatory requirements, licensing and inspections.
  • Ability to correctly and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the HVAC trade, (test lamps, ammeters, voltmeters, torches, refrigerant reclamation, etc.)
  • Ability to read, interprets, and understands technical language in wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.
  • Software proficiency in MS Word/Excel/MS Project/E-Builder/Outlook.
  • Ability to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
  • Strong English oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Ability to distinguish among colors and work in confined spaces.

University of Maryland, College Park

Facilities Management at the University of Maryland, College Park, seeks an Assistant Director for HVAC Operations to manage a $3.4 Million zone operations unit of the HVAC Services unit comprised of two (2) zone superintendents and forty-two (42) mechanics. The zone operations unit is responsible for servicing, installing, maintaining and designing HVAC Systems in 300+ buildings totaling approximately 13 million square feet. The Assistant Director HVAC Operations manages facility renewal projects totaling approximately $1 million for the HVAC Services Operations unit.                                  

Will be responsible for ensuring maintenance, service, installation, and repair of all HVAC equipment and systems at the University of Maryland, College Park and related facilities (11.5 M sq. ft.) to including but not limited to chillers, chilled water and D/X, rooftop, package units, fan coils, cooling towers, low temp refrigeration, growth chambers, environmental systems,  calibration and control of air distribution systems, heating systems, domestic hot water, VFDs, humidifiers, and meters. Provides seamless customer service; assures assigned projects stay on schedule and within the approved Scope of Work; anticipates potential problems and identify and implement solutions. Will manage and/or coordinate activities of in-house technical team members, O&M personnel; coordinate equipment material requirements; maintain project data in automated project management and work order systems; maintain good working relationships with design and construction components within a large facilities management organization; manage the HVAC Operations unit's staffing, performance review and development and disciplinary processes; and, interact with the campus community to identify and assess operational needs and increase customer satisfaction.


Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Technologies Management, Mechanical Engineering or a related field with demonstrated knowledge of HVAC principles and applications.

Ten (10) years experience in progressively more responsible positions in design and management of steam fitting, refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating and ventilation within the commercial and industrial service/construction industry.

Experience must include a minimum of five (5) years in supervisory capacity, directing the work of HVAC supervisors, foreman, and mechanics.  Experience with procurement processes required.

SALARY/BENEFITS: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position is Essential and subject to 24-hour/day, 7-day/week span of operation. Benefits include health, dental, vision and prescription insurance plans, tuition remission for employees and dependents, and participation in the State pension system.
