NRG Energy

Responsible for profitable management of District Energy plant performance parameters, coordinating appropriate testing to determine root cause of problems, providing system or equipment performance testing, capital project management, operations team management and recommending appropriate and cost effective solutions to correct problems and/or improve efficiency.  This position is responsible for projects associated with the operation and, maintenance of the existing plant assets and future expansion projects.

Major Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for Safe overall operation of plants included in the assigned Energy Center including effective management of staff required to operate the plants as needed on a 24/7/365 basis to provide steam, hot and chilled water,
  • Communicate effectively with customers, vendors and other NRG personnel to properly communicate plant status or operational updates.
  • Perform as a Project Manager, if necessary, for capital projects by providing input to engineering regarding quality review of project assumptions and operational feasibility of projects.
  • Review and analyze predictive and preventive maintenance data to determine appropriate major maintenance and normal maintenance projects. Monitor plant efficiency. Identify and troubleshoot deviations from expected values that would improve plant asset performance.
  • Make recommendations on reducing operational and maintenance expenses either by improving system design, modifying system practices, recommending alternate equipment designs, etc.

Job Experience, Abilities and Skills Required: 

  • 7 - 10 years of experience in District Energy preferred or leadership experience within Power, or Industrial facilities such as a Navy powerplant leadership experience
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and personnel management skills - 3-5 years experience
  • Excellent quantitative skills
  • Strong computer skills to include spreadsheets and SAP.
  • Proven planning and organizational skills
  • High tolerance for stress; ability to adapt to changing requirements and quickly bring assignments to completion
  • Team player able to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) at all levels of the organization

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally requires as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • Occasionally requires lifting and climbing of stairs or a ladder, working in confined .
  • Ability to lift, bend, kneel, or sit at a computer for lengthy times.

Working Conditions:

  • Some overtime required as special projects arise.
  • Work is performed in an administration office environment that requires physical mobility as well in a plant environment with large loud machinery
  • Some business travel is required. Possess a valid Driver License at all times.

Demonstrated understanding of steam plant engineering and managerial experience in the operation of solid fuel-fired boilers and chillers and related equipment. A minimum of five (5) years' experience in supervision of boiler/chiller/generating plant operations as well as experience with managing employees in a bargaining unit. Project management experience desired.

Location: Pasadena Ca. - Maintenance Mechanic 16647SP

Job Duties:

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and overhaul steam turbine generators, combustion turbine generators, high pressure steam boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, compressors, water purification equipment, and related distribution systems in the Central and Satellite plants and tunnels. Legibly record temperatures, pressures, and other parameters on log sheets.
  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on machinery/equipment using the plant's computerized maintenance management system.
  • Qualify as Water Lab Technician, collect and analyze water samples from boilers, closed loop heating systems, cooling systems/towers and swimming pools. Chemically treat systems as required. Perform boiler bottom blow downs; make adjustments to boiler surface blow down and chemical injection.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, backwash, regenerate sand/charcoal filters, water softeners, reverse osmosis units, demineralizers, and ultraviolet sterilizers.
  • Assemble/install pipe and fittings for various systems, to include layout, pipefitting, threading, soldering, and gluing.
  • Perform routine inspection tours
  • Assist retrofitting/new installation of equipment
  • Clean and perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5- years' experience repairing/maintaining utility plant equipment, gas turbines and rotating machinery.
  • Must have or ability to obtain within 12-months a valid City-of-Los-Angeles Unlimited Steam Engineer license with Turbine Endorsement and maintain throughout course of employment.
  • Must qualify as Utility Plant Operator/Senior Utility Plant Operator for relief shifts.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California-Driver's license throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80-pounds, bend in all direction
  • Must be able to work all shifts as assigned. Some overtime is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-years' experience in co-generation/combined cycle power plant operations and maintenance.
  • 1- year experience in water chemistry, testing water softeners and boilers.
